Every third weekend of July, Venice dons its festive attire to celebrate one of the most significant and heartfelt events in its tradition: the Feast of the Redeemer. The Feast of the Redeemer has its roots in the 16th century, during a period of great difficulty for the Serenissima Republic of Venice. Between 1575 and 1577, the city was struck by a devastating plague epidemic that caused the death of about a third of the Venetian population. Seeking relief and hope, the Venetian Senate decided to make a solemn vow: if the city were liberated from the plague, they would build a church in honor of the Redeemer.

In 1576, the epidemic began to subside, and as promised, the construction of the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer on the island of Giudecca was initiated. The task was entrusted to the renowned architect Andrea Palladio, and the church was completed in 1592. Since then, every year, Venetians celebrate the liberation from the plague with a festival that combines religious devotion and popular festivities.

The Celebrations of 2024

In 2024, the Feast of the Redeemer will officially begin on Saturday, July 20th. The city of Venice, with its narrow streets and canals, will be enlivened by a series of events culminating in a breathtaking fireworks display.

The day starts with the traditional opening of the votive bridge that connects the Zattere to the Church of the Redeemer on the island of Giudecca. This floating bridge, about 330 meters long, allows the faithful to reach the church for the solemn Holy Mass.

In the evening, the canals fill with gondolas and festively decorated boats, with tables set for convivial dinners featuring Venetian specialties. The Lagoon transforms into a stage of lights and colors, with an atmosphere of joy and sharing.

The most anticipated moment is undoubtedly the fireworks display, which begins at 11:30 PM. The fireworks light up the sky above the Venice Lagoon, creating sparkling reflections on the water and leaving everyone breathless. This unique show attracts thousands of visitors every year.
